LGBTI prisoners: preventing torture and abuses
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) persons are subjected to discrimination and abuses in many regions - if not all of them - around the world. They are particularly vulnerable in places of deprivation of liberty.
The APT states that they are likely to be exposed to the risk of ill-treatment or even torture when they are incarcerated.
The APT recently issued a new practical guide to protect LGBTI persons deprived of liberty. It provides practical guidance to help accounting for sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics in a torture prevention framework. It was intended for detention monitoring bodies, but may also be of great value to support police, prison staff and civil society organizations.
This document dives into the great variety of realities encompassed by the LGBTI acronym, depending on regional contexts. You may discover relevant case studies, good practices and “monitoring checklists” for oversight bodies.
