Australia : abuse of youths in the Northern Territory corrections

A “shocked and appalled” Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced there will be a royal commission into the abuse of youths in the Northern Territory corrections system following explosive revelations aired on the ABC’s Four Corners program on Monday night.

The footage, which has triggered a storm of horrified reactions and recriminations, showed youths being isolated and strapped to mechanical chairs and six boys being tear-gassed at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre in Darwin.
