    Execution of eight inmates carried out in multiple prisons across Iran
    According to the Tasnim News Agency, on the same day, May 15, five inmates were executed in Minab and Bandar Abbas prisons for their alleged involvement in drug smuggling. This concerning surge in executions has become a cause for alarm in recent weeks. HRANA has obtained reports indicating that between April 28 and May 9, 2023, a minimum of 57 prisoners, including two women and two prisoners of conscience, have been executed in various prisons throughout Iran. — HRANA

    The Iranian Diaspora Collective (IDC) launches The Iran Prison Project. By creating an interpretation of Evin Prison in the Metaverse, this interactive experience sheds light on testimonies from former prisoners. Built as a web-accessible 3D environment, the Iran Prison Project features real-life testimony of former prisoners - many of whom are women and artists, journalists, students and LGBTQ people.     Iran grants amnesty to tens of thousands of prisoners
    Iran has granted amnesty to 82,000 people, including 22,000 protesters, according to the head of the country’s judiciary. Addressing a meeting of the top judiciary council, Mohseni Ejei said that the pardons have been issued following a decree by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, last month. Of those granted an amnesty, 22,000 were convicted during recent unrest or pardoned before legal verdicts were announced against them, Ejei added. Of the 60,000 others, around 25,000 were either released from jail or had their prison sentences annulled. Another 34,000 detainees have had their sentences reduced. — Middle East Monitor

    Iranian reformer Tajzadeh says attacked by prison guards for third time in month
    Prominent reformist politician Mostafa Tajzadeh, who is currently being held at Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, says he and his cell mates were attacked by guards for their support of recent comments made by opposition figure Mir Hossein Musavi on regime change. Tajzadeh, 65, said in a letter that he and fellow prisoners Saeed Madani and Hossein Razzaq were attacked after they were subjected to an “unusual and long search” of their cell over the weekend. Tajzadeh said guards seized some personal notes in an attack, which comes amid government claims that more than 80,000 people have been released in a mass amnesty, that was a direct response to their support for Musavi. — RFE/RL

    Women ex-inmates give accounts of abuse in Tabriz prison
    Iranian women inmates who have recently been released from prison in the northwestern city of Tabriz have described the living conditions there as “miserable,” amid brutal crackdown by the Islamic Republic on anti-government protests that have rocked the country for more than four months. The arrested protesters were kept incommunicado during the interrogation process and were subjected to both verbal and physical sexual abuse by their interrogators and prison guards. — IranWire
