Türkiye: 26 deaths in prisons since the start of the year

Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu, a Green Left deputy from Kocaeli, stated today that at least 26 prisoners died in prisons in the first six months of 2023. Gergerlioglu stressed that 15 of the 26 prisoners died in suspicious circumstances. Another 11 people were not released from prison despite being terminally ill.

“The suspicious deaths are striking. Some of them have been declared suicides. We have important questions about the suicides. It is the duty of the prison authorities to prevent suicides. We are told that measures are being taken in this direction. How can a prisoner commit suicide under these measures?” asked Gergerlioğlu.
