The project aims to protect human rights and combat torture in Tajikistan. It is implemented by the public organisation Bureau of Human Rights and Rule of Law in collaboration with the Legal Initiative Fund and Prison Insider. The initiative is funded by the European Union.
The core objective of the project is to prevent torture and ensure accountability for those responsible. To achieve this, the creation of a national preventive mechanism will be supported, and Tajikistan will be accompanied in ratifying international treaties and agreements against torture.
The project will contribute to advancing penitentiary system reforms, reduction of the prison population, development of probation services as an alternative to imprisonment, and improvement of rehabilitation services in correctional facilities. Additionally, the project will implement activities to strengthen institutional and digital security within civil society organisations.
A key objective is to assist Tajikistan in fulfilling its international human rights commitments, including preparations for the Universal Periodic Review – a global process that assesses the human rights situation in the country.
